New year's resolutions

As we rang in 2014, I decided to make two New Years Resolutions. The first one was to read at least twelve books this year. The second to run twice a week, which is a hard feat given the very little time I have to myself. I have gotten away from reading and that is something I have always enjoyed so much throughout my life.   I will update this blog entry periodically with my progress and update on the books I have read.

First book completed in January: "The Age of Miracles. "  This was a come of age scientific fiction book told by the eyes of a girl as the world suddenly begins to get longer and longer day by day.  It tells how through her eyes the world is affected when suddenly "Time" is not dictated by a 24 hour clock that we have all become so accustomed to.
In January I kept my running resolution and ran each week twice a week and had worked up to running 3 miles at a time by the end of the month.

In February, I read "I know why the caged bird sings" by Maya Angelou. I would say that this should be a 20th century American Classic. It shows the world through the eyes of an African American girl in the South as she grows up in the 1940s and her teenage years in San Francisco.

I also read "Life After Life" in February.  This was a book recommended by the New York Times best seller list for 2013.  The book centers around the concept of a baby who was born in England at 1910 but should have died in childbirth but survived because of a turn of events.  The baby grows up to a girl and then a young woman and keeps dying throughout her life.  When ever she dies she is reborn again to a time prior to her death again (its as if she hadn't died) and she has the ability to change her life and the circumstances that were occurring at her life.  The girl lives through two World Wars and the horror and bombing with being in both England and Germany.  The last time she is reborn she attempts to kill Hitler.  It is a gripping suspenseful novel that is captivating.
